MURGITROYD was established by chairman Ian Murgitroyd in 1975, founded on the belief that "there must be a better way" to deliver intellectual property services.

That philosophy led the company to take the unusual step for an intellectual property specialist of becoming incorporated in 1993. It floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2001.

The company opened its first office "overseas" in Dublin in the 1990s

This paved the way for a series of international openings, including its US division, which opened in 2006. Its office in Durham, North Carolina opened in 2008. Today the company has 13 offices around the world, employing 230 staff of which 75 are patent and trademark attorneys.
