GLASGOW-BASED swimming pool builder Barr + Wray has completed a new spa at Le Meridien Airport Hotel in Dubai, marking its 50th project in the Middle East and Asia.

Barr + Wray, led by managing director Alister MacDonald, was sub-contracted to build the £800,000 spa and rooftop swimming pool as part of the five-star hotel's expansion.

The firm said it installed a marble Middle Eastern spa and a Russian banya, complete with a room cooled to sub-zero temperatures to replicate a roll in the snow.

"We were asked by the client to provide a complete package including interior design, fit-out and specialist equipment within a tight time frame and we're proud of the result," said Peter Rietveld, managing director at Barr + Wray Dubai.

The company was formed in 1959 as a water pump distributor before it branched out into pools and spas. It opened its Dubai office in 2008 to sell into the wealth of hotel construction projects in the Middle East.

Its previous projects in 40 countries include building a health club in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest skyscraper.

In Scotland, the firm is currently working on new swimming pools at the Harris Academy in Dundee and Alford Community Campus in Aberdeenshire.
