Prices for dairy products rose on average by 9.9 per cent at this week's GDT (Global Dairy Trade) auction.

The biggest movers on the day were butter milk powder which rose by 13.8 per cent, skim milk powder that increased by 13.4 per cent and whole milk powder that was up 12.9 per cent.

This was the fourth consecutive improvement in trade since the all-time low point of prices recorded at the auction held on August 4.

Separately, research by the UK money-saving website VoucherCodesPro has revealed that more than one third of people who describe themselves as vegetarians eat meat while under the influence of alcohol.

Furthermore, one in three of these "vegetarians" revealed that they did so every time they were drunk on a night out.

"Kebab meat" and "beef burgers" were voted the most common meat for vegetarians to give into when drunk.

The survey polled 1,789 vegetarians in the UK.

United Auctions sold 746 store heifers at Stirling on Wednesday to a top of 240.1p per kg and an average of 210p (+6.4p on the week), while 1077 store, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 265.8p and levelled at 216.5p (+1.3p). Ninety-one store, B&W bullocks sold to 153.1p and averaged 137.8p (-5.3p).

In the rough ring 142 cows averaged 113.8p.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 942 prime lambs in Newton Stewart on Wednesday to a top of £73 per head and 167.8p per kg to average 148.5p (+9.1p).

There were also 648 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £113 for Texels and £56 for Blackfaces.

C&D Auction Marts Ltd sold 15 prime heifers in Dumfries on Wednesday to a top of 225.5p and an average of 195.4p.

There were 65 OTM cattle presented in the rough ring when beef cows averaged 115.3p and dairy cows levelled at 80.2p.

The firm also sold 1413 prime lambs to a top of £75 and 183p to average 145p (+4.5p).

The 447 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £88.50 for Texels and average £59.41 (+£2.40), while light ewes peaked at £49.50 for Hill Cheviots and levelled at £37.72 (+£1.20).
