Washable nappy maker Tots Bots is expanding into a larger factory in a move which will see its workforce expand by around 20 per cent over the next year.

The 20,000 square feet site in the east end of Glasgow is effectively double the size of its previous home in the city.

The workforce at the business currently stands at 50 with up to 12 posts being created over the next year.

The Tots Bots cloth nappies and associated products are sold in high street chains such as Boots and supermarket Tesco as well as a number of independent retailers around the UK.

The family-owned company, established in 2001, has been backed in the move by a five-figure funding package from UK Steel Enterprise.

UKSE, the Tata Steel subsidiary set up to help growing companies operating in former steel producing areas, has been supporting Tots Bots since 2010.

Tots Bots managing director, Magnus Smyth, said: “The support from UKSE has been invaluable in growing our business. It has always been important to us to be made in Scotland and the backing of UKSE has helped us stay here and nurture the business.

“We now have working capital to activate our growth plans which will see us expand the business and recruit local talent. The boost to our workforce, will put us in a prime position to compete in the global market.”

Scott Webb, UKSE regional executive for Scotland, added: “Husband and wife team Magnus and Fiona Smyth have grown the company from a start-up at their kitchen table to a significant local employer. They know the business and their customers inside out. This is exactly the type of business that we are excited about supporting.

“UKSE saw their enthusiasm and expansion strategy as an excellent opportunity to invest in a Scottish company with a huge growth potential and a commitment to training and developing staff.”
