MIKE Loggie, the founder of Saltire Energy, was last night named the 2015 Entrepreneur of the Year at a high-profile awards ceremony in Glasgow.

Mr Loggie received the award for building Aberdeen-based Saltire into a leading provider of rental drilling equipment to the global oil and gas industry, having spotted a gap in the market in 1986.

He was joined on the winners’ podium at last night’s Entrepreneurial Scotland dinner, held in association with The Herald and Deloitte, by Amy Livingstone and Julie Wilson. The founders of baby product brand Cheeky Chompers took the award for Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year, in recognition for developing the business at home and abroad since its creation in 2012.

Sandy Kennedy, chief executive of Entrepreneurial Scotland, said: “Entrepreneurial Scotland’s purpose is to inspire, develop and connect a growing and diverse community of people with an entrepreneurial mindset. Mike Loggie, Amy Livingstone and Julie Wilson are great examples of that mindset in action, turning ideas, skills and determination into success stories for Scotland.”

The evening also saw the presentation of a one-off award to Sir Jim McDonald, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Strathclyde. Sir Jim received the chair award for outstanding contribution to entrepreneurship in Scotland, presented by the chairman for Entrepreneurial Scotland, Chris van der Kuyl.

“Professor Sir Jim McDonald is someone who has displayed outstanding entrepreneurial leadership in a non-traditional setting and I am delighted that we are able to recognise that tonight,” Mr van der Kuyl said.

Meanwhile, outgoing Wood Group chief executive Bob Keiller announced plans to launch a Fellows of Entrepreneurial Scotland scheme in 2016.
