INSPIRING Scotland, the Scottish venture philanthropy firm, has appointed veteran venture capitalist Gary Le Sueur to its board of directors.

The Scot, who co-founded Glasgow-based venture capital firm Scottish Equity Partners in 2005, will donate his time and expertise to the organisation, which invests in Scottish charities and has raised £62 million since its creation in 2009. Inspiring Scotland said its support had helped change the lives of over 60,000 people from disadvantaged communities.

“As a co-founder of Scottish Equity Partners, I have been actively involved in the venture capital industry for almost 20 years,” said Mr Le Sueur, who specialises in energy and green technology sectors. “I have sat on the boards of a significant number of the businesses we have invested in, working alongside management on strategic decision making and helping these companies grow, often to international status. Scotland has a wealth of talented entrepreneurs and it is very satisfying to be a part of their success. “

Inspiring Scotland said it had improved the financial viability and sustainability of over 100 charities by appointing performance advisors and pro bono volunteers who bring their vital skills and experience to Scotlands’ charities. It adopts a venture capital approach, but with returns measured by way of social impact rather than financial gain.

Mr Le Sueur holds board positions with businesses including Glasgow-based environmental consultancy Vital Energi and solar energy specialist Solarcentury. He is also heavily involved in SEP’s fundraising and investor relations.

Inspiring Scotland chairman, Niall Lothian said: “Gary’s business experience and desire to use his venture capital experience for social good will help us at Inspiring Scotland develop and strengthen our ability to deliver the greatest possible return on investment.”
