Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd held their show and sale of prime Suffolk lambs at Ayr yesterday in conjunction with the West & Central Scotland Sheep Club with 20 pens of three presented for judging.

The championship was awarded to Messrs McMillan, Burnbank, Dalrymple for an outstanding pen of 45kg lambs that sold for £110 per head or 244.4p per kg, while the reserve ticket went to Messrs J Montgomerie, Assloss Farm, Kilmarnock for three 44kg lambs that fetched £88 (220p). The 60 show Suffolks averaged 192.3p, while the 902 prime commercial lambs peaked at 209.3p and averaged 186.4p (-18.5p on the week).

There were also 551 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £119 for Texels and £55 for Blackfaces.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 39 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 260p per kg and an average of 202.5p (-6p), while 26 prime bullocks peaked at 242p and levelled at 210.5p (+13.5p). Five prime bulls sold to 215p and averaged 182.5p.

In the rough ring 40 beef cows averaged 133p (+8p).

There were also 1101 prime lambs that sold to £102.50 and 225.3p to average £87 and 194.5p (-8.5p), while 60 prime hoggs peaked at £80 and 181p to level at 158p (+3p).

The 299 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £115 for Texels and average £81, while light ewes peaked at £69 for Cheviots and levelled at £49.

The firm also sold 20 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 212.5p and an average of 182.6p (-5.4p), while 38 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 209.5p and levelled at 185.8p (-7.1p). Three prime, dairy-bred bullocks peaked at 147.5p and levelled at 144.5p (+1.9p). Forty prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 211.5p and averaged 178p (-4p), while 43 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 164.5p and levelled at 137.4p (+11.1p).

In the rough ring 127 beef cows averaged 121.4p (-3.1p) and 195 dairy cows levelled at 96.2p (-1.2p). Eleven bulls averaged 127.9p (+2.8p).

There were also 1096 prime lambs that sold to £110.80 and 254.5p to average 192.3p (-0.8p).

Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 16 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 243p and an average of 226.4p (+3.2p), while 8 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 222p and averaged 201.2p (no change). Eleven prime, B&W bullocks sold to 139p and averaged 130.6p (+1.4p).

In the rough ring 22 beef cows averaged 136.7p (+11.8p) and 26 dairy cows levelled at 98.8p (+7.7p).

There were also 401 prime lambs that sold to £99.50 and 228.6p to average 195.2p (-6.2p), while 309 prime hoggs peaked at £94.50 and 165p to level at 132.8p (-10.8p).
