MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd sold 11 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1204 per head and 227p per kg to average £1122.09 and 214.2p, while a prime bullock fetched £1239 or 210p.

In the rough ring all classes were dearer on the week with the 48 beef cows forward selling to 159.2p and averaging 125.6p, while 111 dairy cows peaked at 128.6p and levelled at 92.7p.

The firm also had another large show of 15 dairy cattle forward that sold to £1450 for a Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £1068.

Meanwhile the trade for sheep continues to be well up on last week, partly as a result of the weaker pound and also the month-long Muslim fast of Ramadan drawing to a close on July 7th when the feast of Eid-ul-Fitr begins.

Wallets Marts sold 875 prime lambs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £103 per head and 224.4p per kg to average 198.5p (+14.6p on the week).

There were also 136 cast sheep that met a roaring trade with ewes selling to £115 for Texels and £73 for Blackfaces.
