ALLOA technology company RMD is targeting turnover of £6m in the next two years after shifting its focus away from datacentres towards power protection systems.

The company, whose clients include AutoTrader, GlaxoSmithKline and the NHS, turned over £3m in the year to November 2015 and has hired operations manager David Purvis from Edinburgh technology business Pyreos to drive its further growth.

RMD managing director Gavin Maxwell said the company’s focus is on ensuring clients receive smooth IT services, which is why it is upping its focus on the supply, installation and maintenance of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. Such systems provide backup power when there are outages or dips.

“The company has been very successful for more than two decades and one of our core strengths has always been our flexibility and readiness to move with the market,” he said.

“With many businesses moving their data to the cloud, there are fewer private datacentres and that market has declined.

“However, the wider market for UPS systems remains buoyant.

“Looking to the future I am confident that our success will come from our power protection specialism.”

As part of its growth strategy the company, which currently employs 22 people, is creating jobs in its customer service and sales departments, having already increased its roster of power engineers.

Until now much of the business’s focus has been on designing and building datacentres, which are essentially large-scale servers that can be used to remotely store large amounts of computer data.

According to RMD this will remain a niche area due to the increasing prominence of the cloud, with the renewed focus on power protection enabling the company to target clients from a wider range of industries.

It is also looking to grow the number of partnership agreements it has with the manufacturers of UPS systems.

“We have partnership agreements with three of the leading manufacturers of uninterruptible power supply systems,” Mr Maxwell said.

“We’re very well placed to further develop the business in this area, offering maintenance and emergency cover as well as supply and installation.”

RMD, which was founded in 1993, was previously known as RMD Power and Cooling.
