EDRINGTON Group has sanctioned further investment to support its multi-million-pound development of a new distillery and visitor centre for The Macallan.

The Glasgow distiller has appointed Elgin-based Robertson Group to build new maturation warehouses and a filling store for the leading malt at its Craigellachie home on Speyside.

The Famous Grouse owner said the investment supports the development of the new £100 million distillery and visitor centre it is building for The Macallan, which is due to open in the spring of 2018.

The additional warehouses and filling store are expected to be completed when construction of the new distillery is ready in the middle of next year.

Robertson Group is also building the distillery.

Graham Hutcheon, managing director for group operations at Edrington, said: “The maturation process plays an important role in the quality of The Macallan. The spirit spends many years in our warehouses as it matures in the highest quality sherry seasoned oak casks.

“The new distillery and the associated warehouses will continue The Macallan’s reputation for uncompromising quality and ensure that we can continue to supply the highest quality single malt Scotch whisky for generations to come.”

Frank Reid, regional managing director of Robertson Northern, said: “These facilities are an essential part of this exciting new distillery and we are proud to be playing such an important role in bringing the project forward. The Macallan is one of the most distinctive brands in the world and it is inspiring to be working on a project of this scale and imagination for Edrington. We are just as enthusiastic as the most ardent whisky fan at seeing the end result.”

In July Edrington reported that fierce competition in Taiwan and the UK had contributed to a 13 per cent profits fall in its last financial year.

More recently it announced it had chosen an office on Glasgow’s Queen Street for its new headquarters.
