MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd held their two-day annual sale of suckled calves in Newton Stewart on Friday and Saturday.

The 568 spring-born heifers forward averaged £663.60 per head and 237.4p per kg (+£7.06 and +4.2p on the year), while 690 spring-born bullocks levelled at £745.60 and 249.2p (+£15.21 and +8.8p).

In the autumn-born section, 651 heifers averaged £849.61 and 205.1p (+£1.19 and +1.3p), while 980 bullocks levelled at £940.68 and 214.8p (+32p and +1p).

Wallets Marts sold 1167 store lambs in Castle Douglas on Saturday. Top prices and averages for selected breeds: Texels to £72.50 and averaged £55.26 for 348; Suffolks £59.50 and £55.08 for 92; Mules £58.50 and £49.46 for 225; Blackfaces £57 and £32.09 for 410.

Sparks flew at United Auction's sale of pedigree cattle at Stirling yesterday when the spring-calving Aberdeen Angus females from the noted Blelack herd were dispersed. Topping the trade was one at 35,000gns followed by others at 15,000gns, 13,000gns, 11,000gns, 10,000gns and9,000gns.

Pedigree Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to 11,000gns for the overall champion from J Doyle, Crookstown, Co. Tyrone and averaged £5379 for 26 (+£835 on the year for a 70 per cent clearance).

Pedigree Beef Shorthorn bulls sold to 6,500gns and averaged £3021 for 13 (-£227 for a 76 per cent clearance), while females peaked at 11,000gns for the best of the Coldochrie draft sale.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 50 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of242p and an average of 209p (-10p on the week), while 29 prime bullocks peaked at 234p and levelled at 206p (-11p).

In the rough ring 71 beef cows sold to 169p and averaged 117p (-6.9p).

There were also 2167 prime lambs that sold to £93 per head and 187.2p per kg to average 160.4p (-10p).

The 734 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £99 for Suffolks and average £72, while light ewes peaked at £53 for Cheviots and levelled at £42.

The firm also sold 23 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 246.5p and an average of 195.9p (-3.4p), while 19 prime bullocks peaked at 215.5p and levelled at 194.4p (+6.4p). Twenty-seven prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 222.5p and averaged 192.2p (-7.9p), while 11 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 177.5p and levelled at 152.1p (+6p).

In the rough ring 149 beef cows sold to 185.5p and averaged 112.6p (-6.1p), while 269 dairy cows peaked at 143.5p and levelled at 81.5p (-1.8p). Eleven bulls sold to 186.5p and averaged 123.2p (+11p).

There were also 2343 prime lambs that sold to £93.80 and 218.4p to average 160.7p (-13.8p).

The 210 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £82.50 for Suffolks and average £56.62, while light ewes peaked at £40 for Jacobs and levelled at £23.68.
