FARRPOINT, the Edinburgh-based telecoms and information technology company, has secured a contract to provide services to a major sporting event taking place in Glasgow next summer.

The company has been chosen by Glasgow City Council to advise on internet connectivity and telecommunications for the Glasgow 2018 Championships. Glasgow and Berlin are co-hosting the event, which takes place in August 2018 and brings a series of sporting events under a single banner. In total six events, covering cycling, acquatics, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, are taking place in Scotland, with FarrPoint tasked with underpinning the occasions with technological solutions.

Andrew Muir, chief executive of FarrPoint, said: “It is essential that events such as the European Championships have the right technology in place from the outset. The network needs to meet the demands and stresses that will be put on it by a large number of diverse users. The correct infrastructure and connectivity is vital in ensuring that the event runs smoothly and meets the expectations of not only the organisers and competitors but the public and the media too. We are delighted to have been appointed to advise on the project.”

FarrPoint, which has a range of public and private sector clients, announced its contract shortly after Harper Macleod unveiled a deal to provide legal services to the championships, building on a similar contract it had at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It is believed the 2018 event will see around 3,000 athletes compete in front of a potential television audience of more than one billion.
