Nevertheless, the signs that the public sector is starting to think about bolstering e-commerce's success are welcome. IT industry group ScotlandIS has recently been granted £70,000 to run a series of master classes across the country over the next few months, and is also launching the first Scottish e-commerce industry awards.
"To showcase the world-leading e-commerce expertise and experience we have here in Scotland, a series of e-commerce awards is overdue," the organisation says.
Categories include best use of e-commerce, best innovation, best newcomer, best digital agency and best specialist supplier. Entries close on December 13, and winners will be announced at a dinner in Glasgow in February.
