ABERDEENSHIRE-based Ecosse Subsea Systems has acquired an English engineering business in a move that signals confidence in the prospects for the oil and gas and renewable energy markets it works in.

Ecosse Subsea said the purchase of County Durham-based MASfab, for an undisclosed sum, would provide an excellent addition to its capabilities. MASfab provides fabrication, welding and construction services to the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors. With 22 employees, MASfab will manufacture the latest version of Ecosse Subsea's SCAR plough. This is used in seabed excavation, trenching and boulder clearance work. Privately-owned Ecosse Subsea has signed a Letter of Intent with ABB to provide seabed clearing and trenching services on the 100-mile £1.2 billion Caithness-Moray electricity transmission link project. The company said last month that oil and gas business had slowed following the fall in the price of crude since June but work in the renewables sector had been compensating.
