AKER Solutions, which is a big employer in Aberdeen, has won a £70 million contract from BP for work on a giant project west of Shetland.

The oil services firm has been appointed to manu-facture and supply subsea controls equipment for the Quad 204 project, which involves the £3 billion re-development of the Schiehallion and Loyal fields.

Aker said such controls allowed wells to be monitored and managed remotely through a complex series of hydraulic and electrical connections between the surface and the sea bed, reducing the need for remote-operated vehicle intervention.

The contract provides another example of how the boom in investment in new oil and gas fields in UK waters is generat- ing valuable work for services operations in Scotland.

A BP spokesperson said: "Around £1bn of subsea contracts have been announced in the past year for this project alone, with the majority of activity occurring in the UK.

"This award to Aker's facility in Aberdeen is the latest in a series of contracts to UK-based companies to supply subsea equipment and expertise to the Quad 204 project."

On Tuesday, Oil & Gas UK said confidence levels increased among services firms and large oil and gas firms operating in the North Sea in the last quarter of 2012.

Aker Solutions employs over 2700 staff in north-east Scotland. In May last year, the firm said it would create 500 additional jobs in the region within 24 months.
