A BOTHWELL-based logistics company is getting behind a scheme to give young people the chance to build careers in the transport industry.

Bullet Express, which employs 80 staff and has a turnover of £10 million, is looking to take on two school leavers at least once a year to give them a grounding in all aspects of the industry over a two to three year period.

Managing director David McCutcheon said he hoped to visit Stonelaw High School in Rutherglen, Glasgow, in the next academic year to talk to pupils about the range of careers the transport industry has to offer, from sales, marketing and accountancy to IT and web design. Workshops will be held before pupils are asked to sit an exam to narrow the field of potential candidates down to around 15.

The group will then be invited to visit Bullet's Bothwell depot, during which its directors will identify the most promising candidates.

Mr McCutcheon said he wanted to give young people the support that he and fellow director Gary Smith received when they established the business in 1990.

He said: "Ideally, we would like the individuals to go all the way through the business and become a manager or director. The opportunity is there for them to grasp."

Mr McCutcheon sees the apprentices supplementing their experience with study on a day-release basis.
