MOTORISTS tempted to use mobile phones while driving may soon be prevented doing so by a new technology being distributed by a company from Rosyth.

CU80, named after the code for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving, has obtained the European rights to sell the world's first car-mounted 'black boxes' for disabling in-car mobiles and smartphones.

Motoring entrepreneurs Eddie Eusebi and Allan Gibbons, who have been licenced to sell the devices in the UK, believe they will do well in the business-to-business market and with consumers such as the parents of young drivers.

The CU80 will be on show at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham on April 24-26.

Eusebi said: "One-quarter of British drivers use their phone while on the move, either with a hands-free kit or by holding their mobile.

"The demand and interest for the CU80 among UK insurance companies and fleets has been very encouraging."

Eusebi and Gibbons respectively run Drivercheck, an online driver licence checking system, and Black Box Telematics, which provides driver data to commercial vehicle businesses. The duo were looking for a solution to in-car mobile phone use when they found US company OBD Edge, which developed the CU80 devices, which retail at about £150.
