A SCOTTISH sports nutrition business is hoping to impress professional teams and athletes with its new recovery drink.

Smart-Tec Nutrition, based in Glasgow, is exhibiting the RecoverFX drink at the Bodypower Expo trade show in Birmingham this weekend.

That event typically attracts up to 60,000 people from across the fitness and sporting industries.

Smart-Tec claim the new product is the UK's only non-milk based recovery drink and contains large amounts of whey protein and waxy maize starch.

The business states those elements will help people engaged in sport to recover more quickly after intense training or competition.

Nutrition director Steven Rinaldi is confident athletes using the drink will see a tangible difference.

He said: "What we will do over the coming weeks and months is contact all the sport scientists at clubs and send them the drinks to sample.

"I would genuinely expect to be in with most of the sports teams in the UK by the end of this year as there is not a product anywhere near this one.

"It is like comparing drinking a glass of milk to drinking a protein shake made from whey protein."

Smart-Tec's website shows it works with athletes including British junior triathlon champion Marc Austin and top Scottish badminton player Alistair Casey.

It also supplies products to Heart of Midlothian football club and English rugby league clubs including the Batley Bulldogs and Dewsbury Rams.

Mr Rinaldi has lined up meetings with Amazon and other large distributors attending the Bodypower show.

That forms part of Smart-Tec's plans to get RecoverFX into fitness retail shops and gyms while the distribution network of sister company Powerhouse Fitness may also be called upon to help speed that process up.

Mr Rinaldi said: "It is very early days as we have been formulating the product for months but have only just got it this week.

"Part of our challenge is educating the market but we will go out there with our sales team.

"As we have quite a big distribution network, particularly through Powerhouse Fitness channels, we can very quickly get our products out into the local gyms."

Smart-Tec also makes products including multi-vitamins, protein powders, energy drinks and bars.

Mr Rinaldi said it checks all its products using the HFL Sport Science organisation so they are safe for use by athletes and won't affect drug-test results.
