A FORMER chief executive of Yorkshire Building Society has emerged as the leading candidate to replaced Sir George Mathewson as chairman of challenger bank Shawbrook.

Iain Cornish has been assisting banking watchdogs with their long awaited probe into the collapse of HBOS as an independent reviewer of the investigation.

He is also a non-executive director at St James's Place Wealth Management and Arrow Global.

Mr Cornish was previously on the board at the Bank of England's Prudential Regulation Authority but stepped down last month to take up an unspecified position elsewhere.

Sir George had indicated his intention to step down from his post at Essex based Shawbrook, which he has been with since its formation in 2011, prior to its listing on the London Stock Exchange last month where it was valued at £725 million.

However Sir George, the former Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive and chairman, said he would remain in the role at the challenger bank until a suitable successor was found.

It emerged Sir George sold £897,000 worth of shares in Shawbrook as part of the flotation while he retained shares with a value of around £2.7m.

The chairman role at Shawbrook currently has an annual fee of £122,700.

Shawbrook decline to comment.
