GLASGOW Chamber of Commerce has made the shortlist in a global award for its activities in creating jobs and supporting business development in the city.

It is the only Chamber from the UK and one of only two in Europe to be nominated at the World Chambers Competition, which received entries from 39 countries.

Glasgow is in the running for the best job creation and business development project prize.

Its efforts to tackle youth unemployment are believed to be what caught the attention of judges.

The Chamber has been involved in the Youth Employment Action Group in the city, working with several large employers, to support more 16 to 24 year olds getting sustainable employment.

That has involved initiatives such as getting business sponsors for secondary education institutions and recruiting mentors for disadvantaged youngsters through the Inspiring500 campaign, which has been backed by The Herald.

Alongside that the Chamber's Workforce Solutions department has been set-up to provide a one-stop shop for recruitment and employment issues.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Italian city of Turin in June.
