Howden, the Renfrew-based engineer now in US ownership, today launches a programme that extends its innovative postgraduate training model to its customers and other business partners.

The Howden Academy, created in 2008 as an international postgraduate programme hosted by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), has since delivered specialist operational training to more than 400 of the company's engineering graduates.

The new "Developing Excellence through Partnership" programme extends the course taught on GCU's city campus to businesses, agents, consultants and others who work with Howden's wide range of products. The company says this amounts to "a range of well-known internationally recognised companies and global partners".

Professor Pamela Gillies, principal and vice-chancellor of GCU, said: "It is rare that prestigious international companies such as Howden and universities like GCU come together to co-create and present new educational programmes. This approach is surely the way to deliver the relevant education and expertise that industries need."

Howden designs, engineers and manufactures air and gas handling equipment, including industrial fans, process gas compressors and rotary heat exchangers.

It lost its independence and stock market listing when it was acquired in 1997 by Dublin-based Charter International, which last November sold it to the Colfax corporation.

Ian Brander, Howden's chief executive, said: "Many of the organisations we work with have asked if their staff could take part in the programme and learn more about the products they deal with every day.

"We pride ourselves on listening to our partners and the new programme will support the continuous personal and business development of both ourselves and our partners."
