JJB is understood to have paid off the bulk of a near £6 million VAT "black hole" found by finance director Dave Williams when he joined in January 2011.
The omission is understood to relate to tax on so-called borderline items, such as small men's clothing that were incorrectly coded as children's items, which are VAT exempt.
