M&S reports a gloomy Christmas

M&S said like-for-like sales of general merchandise, such as clothes, were 3.8% down in the 13 weeks to December 29, compounding a sales fall in the same period last year.

Food sales were up 0.3%.

This suggests M&S, which has 67 stores in Scotland, is lagging its high street rivals.

Mr Bolland, who joined M&S from supermarket chain Wm Morrison in May 2010, said: "Our food business has performed very well with record sales over the key Christmas trading period.
