Macphie of Glenbervie, the leading independent manufacturer of high-quality food ingredients, has completed a pilot research and development programme with Heriot-Watt University that will help it compete more strongly against much larger global competitors.

The two organisations have successfully trialled microwave sensors, designed by the university and located in the company's UHT production plant which manufactures products such as sweet and savoury sauces, glazes, dairy cream alternatives and desserts.

Ashley Baker, the firm's head of research and development said: "Our success in a market dominated by a number of very large players is because of our ability to offer new, more convenient and high quality products."
