Maplin to trial first airport store in Glasgow

ELECTRONICS retailer Maplin is trialling its first airport store in Glasgow from next month.

The company has spent £100,000 on a 1000 square-foot outlet that will open on March 1.

Maplin chief executive John Cleland said: "With around 7.4 million passengers each year passing through Glasgow Airport, this is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the Maplin brand.

"Customers can spend some time browsing in the store whilst they wait for their flight, enjoying some of the new interactive features the store offers.

"If they don't want to take their purchase on their travels with them we can deliver it to their homes once they return."

Maplin is to give the shop a one year trial as it tries out a new store model designed to take advantage of the browsing time passengers have at airports.

Among the products on offer will be an extended range of tablet accessories, phone accessories and 3D printers.

The store will feature three interactive internet hubs where shoppers can consider Maplin's full range.

A "play table" will feature products such as the Raspberry Pi, a product designed for computer programming, and 3D printers.

The store will also offer a click-and-collect service allowing travellers returning to Glasgow to pick up orders or get them delivered to their homes.

Francois Bourienne, commercial director at Glasgow Airport, said: "The new unit, which I'm sure will be extremely popular with both passengers and staff alike, will be a welcome addition to our growing retail portfolio."
