ABERDEEN City Council and hospitality group Marriott International have completed their agreement to deliver an £18 million hotel at the city's Marischal Square development, aimed at guests staying for at least five nights.

The 126-room, four-star Residence Inn by Marriott will create 30 jobs, and has been described as a "huge vote of confidence" in the regeneration of the city centre.

Work on the hotel is set to start in January with expected completion in summer 2017.

It will comprise 114 studios and 12 one-bedroom suites, each with a kitchen and separate living and sleeping areas.

It also marks the Residence Inn brand's first outpost in Aberdeen and provides a boost to the £107 million mixed-use Marischal Square project, which the council is developing with urban regeneration and property specialist Muse Developments, and fully funded by Aviva Investors.

The development will create 300 jobs during its construction and potentially 1,500 new jobs in the area once complete.

Regarding the hotel deal, Aberdeen City Council leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: "This agreement is a major boost for the city."

The council's deputy leader Councillor Marie Boulton added that there is a need for quality hotel accommodation in the city centre.
