Micro-finance boost for social enterprise firm

An innovative social enterprise that provides jobs and volunteering opportunities for the unemployed by transforming unwanted wood into hand-crafted furniture has raised £10,000 from micro-finance lender DSL Business Finance to expand its operation and hire an extra employee.

Glasgow Wood Recycling currently has nine employees and about 25 volunteers, many of whom have been affected by ill- health, alcohol or addiction problems.

The firm generates income by collecting 400 tonnes of unwanted timber from building sites and homes each year and turning it into home and garden furniture.
