Entrepreneur Mike Welch has sold his online tyre business Blackcircles to French giant Michelin for £50 million.
Mr Welch, who is originally from Liverpool, said he was "delighted" with the deal.
The Peebles company counts former Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy among its investors.
Michelin said the transaction was a further step forward in its e-commerce strategy.
