Up to 10,000 jobs could go at Tesco as chief executive Dave Lewis attempts to reverse the slump in sales and profits, according to a report.

Up to 6000 jobs could disappear from head offices and the 43 stores earmarked for closure, including four in Scotland, but another 4000 are said to be at risk from an overhaul of how the company runs its stores.

Mr Lewis's plan is to remove a layer of management in between store manager and shop assistants. Alternative roles offered to staff may be part-time or lower-paid.

Over 320 jobs are already being shed from Tesco's workforce in Scotland.

Tesco, the UK's biggest private sector employer, employs more than 310,000 staff across 3330 stores. It has 64 superstores in Scotland and 144 smaller outlets.

Mr Lewis has already warned that group trading profits in this financial year will not exceed £1.4bn, down from £3.3bn last year,

Almost 4000 jobs went between Asda and Morrisons last year while last month Sainsbury's cut 500 backroom jobs.
