Olympics 'distracted would-be gamblers'

Blanket Olympic television coverage and cancelled horse races in a soggy summer reduced the sums gambled in British betting shops, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes.

The Olympics in London were hugely popular with the public but this did not translate into a surge in people taking a punt on the outcomes of events.

Ladbrokes said amounts staked in its British betting shops fell 4.9% in the three months to the end of September, covering the Olympics and Paralympics and when bad weather caused the cancellation of 38 horse racing meetings.
