£6.5m pledge to nurture green energy skills

BUSINESS Secretary Vince Cable has announced a £6.5 million investment to beef up engineering skills for the renewable energy industry, as the UK gears up for a major expansion of offshore wind and marine energy, writes Douglas Hamilton.

The money will support a new Doctorate Centre in Offshore Renewable Energy, providing “the intellectual challenge of a PhD, coupled with extensive business leadership training”.

In January, students are expected to start courses provided by the University of Edinburgh, alongside Strathclyde and Exeter universities, and financed through the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
