ALL 15 jobs at a Premier Foods flour mill are under threat after the group announced plans to close the site.

The mill, in Dunaskin Street, Glasgow, mainly supplies flour to the Hovis bakery on Duke Street in the city. However, Premier Foods said it had too much capacity in its milling operations to justify keeping the west end site open.

The mill, near Kelvingrove Park, is one of the smallest in the Premier Foods portfolio.

Bob Spooner, managing director of bread, and group supply chain director, said: "We recognise the impact our proposal will have on our employees. However, given excess capacity in our milling network, it's important we take the necessary steps to build a more sustainable milling business."

Staff may be given the chance to relocate to nearby Premier Foods sites, including the Duke Street Bakery, a distribution depot at Eurocentral in North Lanarkshire, and bakery ingredients arm Fleming Howden at Newbridge on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Premier Foods said consultations with staff would start in the next few days and the mill may close by the end of March.

There have been flour mills on the banks of the River Kelvin in Glasgow since the 1840s.

Also yesterday, Premier Foods said it was having to import wheat from the European Union after the UK harvest was the worst for 35 years.

Last year the company announced plans to cut 900 jobs in its bread division by shutting down bakeries in Birmingham and London.
