THE flagship print centre where The Herald is produced is celebrating its 10th anniversary today.

The Cambuslang site was established in 2002 by SMG and transferred over to current owners Newsquest the following year when it bought The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times.

The 6.4 acre site, which employs more than 80 people, is home to two printing presses and can produce more than 1000 newspapers a minute.

In a typical week it prints 3.7 million newspapers, using 20,000 aluminium plates, 600 tonnes of paper and 10 tonnes of ink.

Titles from across Scotland and the north of England are produced and there are also external contracts with local authorities and businesses which have their own publications.

Other newspaper groups, including Daily Mail and General Trust, also use the plant.

Herald & Times production director Alistair Gay said: "When we first moved here in 2002 we only had four titles and now we have about 47 titles coming out of the plant.

"The print schedule has grown considerably over the past 10 years and that is what we need as a contract printer.

"When it opened 10 years ago it was at the forefront of print technology and we have augmented that with new technology and updated software to maintain the efficiency."

Mr Gay also highlighted the green credentials of the plant with paper, aluminium, fluid and ink all being recycled.
