TECHNOLOGY and design company Pufferfish, which specialises in digital displays for spheres, has secured £615,000 of new investment which will see it open an office in North America.

The Edinburgh company's technology has recently been seen in the BBC television programme Stargazing Live which was presented by Brian Cox and Dara O'Briain.

The business counts Audi, the National Museum of Scotland, the Disney Epcot Centre, the band Coldplay and the Eurovision song contest as among the previous customers for its puffersphere products.

Pufferfish's management team have invested alongside Par Equity, the Scottish Investment Bank and Canadian optical systems manufacturer B-Con Engineering.

The company, which employs 10 people, intends to invest further in its product range and will also set up a base in Canada as it bids to increase sales to North America.

Geoff Kell, managing director, said: "We already export 80 per cent of our spheres and while we are actively looking at developing opportunities in a number of overseas markets, we feel North America represents the best growth opportunities in the short to medium term."

Mr Kell said the focus will be on its smaller interactive spheres which are used in areas including, museums and visitor attractions, events and academia.

Former Edinburgh Instruments and Concept Systems executive Alan Faichney is also joining the Pufferfish board as chairman. Current chairman Iain Mackay will stay on the board as a non-executive.

Par Equity's Paul Atkinson and Brian Creber, from B-Con, will also join the board.
