A construction firm has won a £2.5 million contract to build a new heliport that could be used by stars visiting the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow.

Raynesway Construction has been appointed by SECC to design and build a new heliport and support facilities in Govan south of the Clyde.

The building of the new heliport to replace the existing facility will release land for development on the west side of the SECC on the other side of the river. The project also includes work on related infrastructure including access roads and car parking.

The helipad is being built on a brownfield site at Linthouse Road. The work Raynesway is doing is due to be completed in April 2014. The contract is one of a series worth more than £5m in total that Paisley-based Raynesway has won in recent months.

Owned by construction giant Balfour Beatty, Raynesway has been awarded a £1.9m contract for the groundworks for a new B&Q store in Port Glasgow Inverclyde. The contract will include the construction of a new car park and modifications to existing roads at the site, as well as diverting the Devol Burn.

It was awarded by BAM Construction.

Raynesway won a £800,000 contract to build and configure the external road works for a new Morrison's store at Kinghorn Road in Kirkcaldy, Fife. The contract was awarded by the main contractor, Muir Construction.

The works include the removal of two existing roundabouts in Esplanade Road and their replacement with a new double junction with traffic signals.

Stephen Scott, managing director of Raynesway Construction, said: "Given the continuing economic climate, we are delighted to secure these projects from a diverse range of customers."

He said Raynesway has also been reappointed to frameworks which allow the firm to tender for work in specified areas for both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.

The heliport by the SECC is operated by Bond Air Services.
