Ms Sandhu’s father, Charan Gill, landed a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his success in a series of ventures.

Known as the curry king, Mr Gill has invested in a range of leisure and property ventures since he sold his Harlequin restaurants business for £8m in 2006.

He opened the Slumdog restaurant on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street in 2009 and bought the Quayside restaurant and leisure complex in Musselburgh last year.

Asim Sarwar was Businessman of the Year.

Samrat Sarkar was named Entrepreneur of the Year.

The Business of the Year was Perfect Glazing (Glasgow) Limited, while Khan Autos won the award for Small Business of the Year.

Ricky Singh was judged to be the Young Achiever of the Year.

Saima Afzal, of Kumon Educational in Glasgow, was Franchisee of the Year.

The Community Award went to E Waste Solutions.

The awards were presented at a dinner held at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow.

The keynote speaker at the event was Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

She said: “The Scottish Asian Business Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the major contribution the Scottish Asian business community makes to Scotland.”
