See cinemas' new releases ... without leaving home

UNLIKE everything from music to the newspaper industry, the big screen appears to have avoided the calamity inflicted by the internet.

This is despite illegal film downloads being rife, DVD sales have been falling and video rental firms such as Blockbuster wondering what to do with themselves.

While there are no signs of this changing, the Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse are pioneering a move that could mean cinemas' relationship with the internet becomes about far more than selling tickets. In the next few weeks, both will launch online streaming services to let customers watch certain films, sometimes at the same time as they are in the cinema. Apart from a similar venture by London's Curzon cinema, it is the first such move in the UK.
