TRAVEL search business Skyscanner is acquiring Hungarian mobile app developer Distinction, as it noted the increasing volume of travel plans made on the move.

Edinburgh-based Skyscanner said the deal, terms of which were not disclosed, will accelerate the expansion of its in-house mobile team.

Distinction, which has 30 staff comprising mobile designers and developers, is based in Budapest, which will become Skyscanner's main mobile hub.

"This will be supported by the creation of additional roles to drive the company's mobile growth across Skyscanner's global offices," the Scottish company said.

The deal comes after Distinction had created its new owner's hotel app, which launched in August.

The same month Skyscanner said it was creating 250 new jobs as it looked to double its team over the next 12 months to boost its international growth.

In total, all Skyscanner apps have been downloaded more than 30 million times and are available in more than 30 languages.

In June, Skyscanner confirmed that it was buying Chinese travel search start-up Youbibi.

Looking at the latest deal, Gareth Williams, Skyscanner's co-founder and chief executive, said: "The future of online travel booking is undoubtedly mobile."

Earlier this month the firm was described by Scottish Equity Partners as Scotland's first $1 billion web company.
