Prospects for a takeover of medical equipment maker Smith & Nephew have dimmed leading its shares to tumble.

The announcement of a $2 billion share buyback from US firm Stryker made it increasingly unlikely it will launch a bid for Smith & Nephew, according to traders and analysts.

That caused shares to fall 68p, or 5.7 per cent, to 1131p.
