Sports Direct International has confirmed plans to bid for embattled Irish chain Elverys Sports.

Sports Direct, controlled by Newcastle United owner and Rangers investor Mike Ashley, said it welcomed the appointment of a temporary examiner for Elverys to determine its future ownership. Elverys was put up for sale by Staunton Sports to settle debts with Ireland's National Asset Management Agency, which asked the High Court to appoint an examiner.

Dave Forsey, Sports Direct chief executive, said Elverys would be a good strategic fit.
