SSE has acquired a controlling stake in Scottish turbine manufacturer Wind Towers after partner Marsh Wind Technology decided to focus on its Danish operations.

The energy firm is taking a further 40.5% holding to give it 80.1%, while Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) retains its 19.9% stake in the Campeltown business.

No details were released on the value of the deal but the transaction is set to be completed within weeks.

The Perth company sees strategic value in taking control of Wind Towers.

Jim McPhillimy, SSE managing director of group services, said: "A robust and sustainable supply chain offers significant value to renewable energy developers in Scotland.

"We recognise SSE has an important role in helping create this and that is why we have entered into strategic alliances and investments to secure this supply chain for Scotland.

"Wind Towers is an important link in that chain and its strategic importance to SSE is reflected in our decision to increase our share in the joint venture."

The 100-strong workforce at Wind Towers will not be affected.

Last February, SSE, Marsh and HIE struck a deal with administrators to save the facility after the previous owner Skykon called in insolvency professionals. The plant had been owned by Vestas.

SSE Renewables confirmed yesterday it plans to get Wind Towers to build structures for the Cour wind farm which is around 13 miles south of Tarbert in Kintyre.
