THE developers behind the £750 million offshore interconnector project to export renewable power from western Scotland to England and Wales are facing higher-than-expected compensation payments to fishermen after badly falling out with them during the survey stage last year.

Shellfishermen in the west of Scotland and Northern Ireland are accusing Network Marine, the Devon-based consultants advising Scottish Power and National Grid, of handling them in an "arrogant" and "high-handed" manner.
At least 200 vessels, many of them turning over hundreds of thousands of pounds every year, depend on the waters in the Firth of Clyde and Irish Sea for their livelihoods. By Sunday Herald estimates, the industry is worth at least £50 million a year.
