Tesco in deal with Aviva

TESCO Bank, the Edinburgh-based institution aiming to take on the established high street names, has struck a five-year deal with insurance heavyweight Aviva to sell its protection products.

Tesco Bank, headed by former HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland executive Benny Higgins, will offer Aviva products such as life insurance and critical illness cover online or over the telephone.

Customers will also be able to obtain information through some Tesco stores. However, the bank has yet to launch the mortgages and current accounts that will signal a serious intent to break into the mainstream banking sector.
