The Pippa effect hits consumer favourite

department store chain John Lewis saw revenue fall last week even though fashion sales were boosted by shoppers trying to copy the look of Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge who married Prince William in a lavish ceremony at the end of April.

The employee-owned retailer said yesterday sales fell 1.4% year-on-year to £54.3 million in the week to May 7 and were down 3% excluding VAT sales tax.

Sales at the company’s Aberdeen store rose by 1.6% during the same period but were down 3.2% in Edinburgh and came in 2.8% lower in Glasgow.
