TWO Scotland-based business people have picked up prizes at Ernst & Young's UK-wide entrepreneur of the year awards ceremony.

BSW Timber's Tony Hackney was named turnaround entrepreneur of the year for his role in revitalising the Berwickshire sawmill.

The judging panel, led by former BP chief executive Lord Browne, hailed Mr Hackney's achievements in overseeing BSW to become the market leader in the UK as "amazing".

There was also a prize for Genius Foods founder Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne.

The Edinburgh-based chef took the emerging entrepreneur of the year category at the event in London. Her gluten-free bakery products are now stocked by several supermarkets and the range is available in North America and Spain.

Jim Bishop, Scotland senior partner at Ernst & Young, said: "The role that entrepreneurs such as Tony and Lucinda have to play in the resurgence of the economy cannot be overstated.

"Their continued success will promote Scotland as a place to do business around the world, generating employment and providing inspiration to their peers."

Other winners included Fred Done of Betfred, taking the master entrepreneur title, and Nick Wheeler, of Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts, being named best entrepreneur in consumer products and services.
