WESTERN Ferries (Clyde) has unveiled a £2.5 million investment to upgrade its terminal at McInroy’s Point in Gourock.

The privately-owned business, which runs the Gourock to Dunoon ferry service, said the project will involve replacing the current berthing structure and the addition of a new 30-metre link-span.

George Leslie will be responsible for the civil engineering works, with Arch Henderson appointed to oversee delivery.

Confirmation of the work comes after Western revealed in January it planned to invest several million pounds in upgrading quayside infrastructure. It will turn its attention to upgrading facilities on the Dunoon side once work at McInroy’s Point is complete.

Managing director Gordon Ross said: “Our continuing reinvestment is focused on ensuring Western Ferries provides the most frequent, reliable and robust ferry service possible for the Cowal and Inverclyde communities and for the 1.3 million passengers and 650,000 vehicles we safely transport every year.”

The McInroy’s Point project marks the latest stage of a long-term investment programme kick-started by the firm 16 years ago, which has seen it introduce four new vessels, two link spans, two new berthing structures and larger car marshalling areas.

Nearly £24m will have been invested by the time the latest work, scheduled to begin at the end of June, is complete. The company has two berthing structures and link-spans on both sides of the crossing.
