BP confirms cost of cleaning up disaster has risen to $8bn

BP has said the cost of cleaning up its Gulf of Mexico oil spill has risen to $8bn (£5.2bn) – an increase of more than $2bn in the last month alone.

The UK energy company said it had paid out about $399m in claims to those affected by the spill, mainly local fishermen, oil workers and tourist resort operators. The environmental disaster is the worst in US history.
