As the winter sun shone on his office in rural Midlothian this week, Malcolm Bateman seemed to be relishing life at the cutting edge of economic development in Scotland after long years in what proved to be sunset industries.
Bateman, who turned 61 this week, recently added the chairmanship of the Edinburgh Science Triangle (EST), which links universities and business, to a portfolio of roles in technology ventures. These give him a privileged view of the state of the key sector in Scotland.
