Whisky firm drinks to launch of £10,000-a-bottle beverage

Whisky distiller Edrington Group last night unveiled its oldest whisky to date – a 50-year-old Highland Park, worth £10,000 a bottle.

To mark the release, the Glasgow-based company, whose best-known brands also include Famous Grouse and The Macallan, employed the services of Maeve Gillies, the Scottish jewellery designer based in midtown Manhattan, to produce an ornate sterling silver casing to encapsulate each bottle.

The design was inspired by Highland Park’s Orcadian heritage.

Ms Gillies, whose five-year-old New York business MaeVona has carved a glittering niche in the US retail world with her brand of Celtic- inspired jewellery, yesterday told The Herald: “I’m a global Scot and I was speaking at a conference in Edinburgh and, little did I know, Edrington were in the audience and they approached me later.

“Little did they know that I’m not just a jewellery designer. I’m also a malt whisky enthusiast,” said Gillies, who this year has sold 1000 rings in the US.

“In fact, I come from a family of whisky enthusiasts.”

Gillies’s great-grandfather, William, was a founding father of what would eventually become the SNP.

The 50-year-old Highland Park was launched at Harrods in London, and only 275 bottles have been produced.
