Wallets Marts sold 1006 prime lambs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £99 per head and 200p per kg to average 162p (+10.6p on the week).

The firm also had 147 cast sheep forward when ewes sold to £129 for Texels and £58.50 for Blackfaces.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 12 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1428 per head and 230p per kg to average £1227.14 and 226.9p, while 4 prime bullocks peaked at £1247 and 232p to level at £1201.03 and 210.1p. Four prime bulls sold to £1550.40 and 204p to average £1303.10 and 190.3p.

In the rough ring 53 beef cows averaged 131.4p and 140 dairy cows levelled at 95.4p. Eight bulls averaged 97.3p and 20 clean OTM cattle levelled at 159.4p.

A smaller show of 8 dairy cattle sold to £1450 for a freshly-calved Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £1220.

The firm also held its monthly sale of beef-breeding cattle that met a similar trade to last month. Top prices and averages: Heifers with calf-at-foot to £2250 and averaged £1725,53 for 85; cows and calves £1950 and £1319.17 for 12; bulling heifers £1310 and £1077 for 35.
